Summary

Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve。 Luckily she meets Tadano, a timid wallflower who decides to step out of his comfort zone in order to help her achieve her goal of making 100 friends。

Komi is starting her second year of high school, and she’s feeling a bit melancholy that all the good times of the previous year are now behind her。 How can anything else compare? But when Komi runs into a girl in her new class with outrageous fashion sense crying in the bathroom, she’s able to put all her wonderful friend-making experience to good use and reach out to another person in need。 Komi has leveled up!

After an onslaught of new characters who haven't contributed much of anything to the story, Komi's newest friend, Rumiko Manbagi, has an interesting personality and problems and could actually upset the status quo if a little crush hinted at continues to develop。 Promising。 After an onslaught of new characters who haven't contributed much of anything to the story, Komi's newest friend, Rumiko Manbagi, has an interesting personality and problems and could actually upset the status quo if a little crush hinted at continues to develop。 Promising。 。。。more

I seriously love Komi and her friends so much。 This one was sweet because it had been a while since I'd picked up a volume and I was reminded of how much I love this story。 I laughed and smirked when I realized where this series is now going with the addition of a new character。 It looks like Komi isn't the only popular one in this book。Also, I LOVED the chapter about her brother! That was a fun little aside I didn't know I needed until I read it!Happy reading! Year two of high school and Komi's goal of 100 friends, a challenge as she has a communication disorder。 That issue is well done here because, while it is clear this is real for her, and others, there is a continuum of related characters in the series who also have trouble communicating due to shyness, being "wallflowers," and so on。 Some are seen as tough but are actually social anxious, and so on。In this one there is a fitness test in which Komi does very well, but it is not what happens so mu Year two of high school and Komi's goal of 100 friends, a challenge as she has a communication disorder。 That issue is well done here because, while it is clear this is real for her, and others, there is a continuum of related characters in the series who also have trouble communicating due to shyness, being "wallflowers," and so on。 Some are seen as tough but are actually social anxious, and so on。In this one there is a fitness test in which Komi does very well, but it is not what happens so much as who: Rumiko Manbagi happens, who has a wild taste in fashion and wears weird makeup and talks in slang。 She is new to the school so needs friends, and Komi steps in, even accepts a sleepover invite from her, her first ever! But the big issue here is that Tadano helps Rumiko and so she likes him for this; will this become a romantic comedy?!Komi bowling in a cat costume reveals some social progress, too。The story with Tadano’s younger sister and Komi’s younger brother is fun。 。。。more

Another perfect volume of my favorite book to read。 The new students are fantastic, and the gentle zen Komi moments are plentiful。 Komi's friendship with Manbagi has the potential to carry us to some new ground, seeing Komi bowling in a cat onesie is such a stretch from when we were first introduced to her, it's great momentum。 I also especially loved the story between younger Komi and Tadano siblings。 More of that please! New School Year, Same SweetnessAlmost sickly sweet this volume。 It did help ease in the new characters though! Especially since they are all full of energy。

Just when you thought that this series is losing steam, it starts an arc that could see this series transition into a romantic comedy。 Introducing a gyaru/gal as as potential rival for Komi could go in a different but predictable direction。 I'm not a big fan of Rumiko the gyaru, but I am of the younger Komi/Tadano combination。 I actually want to see more of their short arcs because they are way more interesting to me than their elder siblings。This volume is fun in spurts, and though it seems to Just when you thought that this series is losing steam, it starts an arc that could see this series transition into a romantic comedy。 Introducing a gyaru/gal as as potential rival for Komi could go in a different but predictable direction。 I'm not a big fan of Rumiko the gyaru, but I am of the younger Komi/Tadano combination。 I actually want to see more of their short arcs because they are way more interesting to me than their elder siblings。This volume is fun in spurts, and though it seems to drag, it somehow picks up at the end to make you want to read the next volume。 。。。more

Refreshing volume with the same foolishness you’d come to expect from this series! A new schoolyear and a slightly friendlier and more talkative Komi is here。 I keep saying this, but some of Komi’s friends are a bit strange。 The gyaru girl was about to irk me at first with her slang, but she turned out all right。 I was gonna scream if she said, “this friendship hit different。” Anyway, I loved seeing the reverse dynamic between Komi’s brother and his own version of Tadano。 While Komi is quiet and Refreshing volume with the same foolishness you’d come to expect from this series! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Okay this volume was so special and refreshing。 The new school year brought new anxieties but it’s interesting to see how new characters cope with Komi’s standoffish demeanor。 ALSO I so badly wanted to read more of Tadano’s sister and Komi’s brother! I blanking on their names but that section was soooo fun to read。 I truly hope there is more where that came from。

New year。 New class。 New friend(s)。Komi and Tadano suffer mild unease as the school years turnover。 Will they be separated into different classes once they become second-year students? Nope。 And sure enough, Najimi is right behind them, as wonderfully rambunctious as ever。 KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE #10 offers a soft reset, and it turns out Komi isn't the only girl seeking to resolve her social inadequacies。New to Komi's book of friends is a frantic gyaru, Rumiko Manbagi, whose penchant for embellished dialogue, chaotic make-up, and hyper-imaginative anxiety mark her as a rather quirky addition to the crew。 At first, Manbagi is a consummate annoyance, but she eventually drops her façade and learns to express herself on her own terms with a bit of encouragement。 Komi's there for support, sure, but Tadano's constant presence as a clueless but reliable stalwart shouldn't be overlooked (he cleans up her vomit at one point)。 Manbagi is a wreck, but no matter how many times she loses her cool, Tadano is always there to reassure her everything's going to be okay。 Indeed, it seems Miss Manbagi has developed a bit of a crush on Mr。 Average。KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE #10 prioritizes repositioning Komi, Tadano, and a few others from the previous schoolyear in their new surroundings。 Katai is still taking up air。 Agari is still writing restaurant reviews。 Naruse is still obsessed with himself。 And so on。 But there's something nifty happening elsewhere on campus: Tadano's little sister (Hitomi) and Komi's little brother (Shosuke) are causing a stir。As readers already know, Hitomi is a bit of a nuisance, while Shosuke exudes quiet confidence and would rather be left alone。 The two first-year students are seated next to one another and it looks like the coming school year will be rife with all manner of strange and exhausting encounters between this fated pair of opposites。 One had hoped, previously, these two siblings would work behind the scenes to further the dynamic between Tadano and Komi, but now, one can't help but wonder if these two characters might have their own mini-fandom rooting for them。 Alas, it's a new schoolyear, and anything is possible。 。。。more

Another day, another adorable volume of Komi Can't Communicate。I really loved Manbagi's introduction and her friendship with Komi。 Like a lot of character archetypes, the gyaru character is usually the same in most media so I wasn't impressed when I saw she'd be the new character of the volume。 But I was pleasantly surprised and delighted! It's a really heartfelt premise, that a high schooler has a communication disorder and a few classmates rally to help her。 It's a nice way to bring awareness to differences in communication and even that communication disorders exist。 There's also a lot of great depictions of the differences of how people think they appear in a social situation and how much better others actually view them。 And some characters that could be pure comic relief actually end up being developed and are given a lot of It's a really heartfelt premise, that a high schooler has a communication disorder and a few classmates rally to help her。 It's a nice way to bring awareness to differences in communication and even that communication disorders exist。 There's also a lot of great depictions of the differences of how people think they appear in a social situation and how much better others actually view them。 And some characters that could be pure comic relief actually end up being developed and are given a lot of empathy, which is a nice reminder to be kind and not rush to judge。 That said, I really don't like the art style, especially the design of the main character。 In addition, Komi's goal to have 100 friends means there a LOT of side characters and it's easy to lose track of who is who and not understand what's going on。 And although it does fall prey to the "this is a manga series so stretch the plot out as much as possible!" issue, at least there is a sense of time passing; the characters move on to year 2 of high school in this volume, and there is growth and change。 For now it is fun。**Thanks to the artist, publisher, and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Nope, still can’t communicate。 It’s a new year, classes are changing, and that brings a new wave of anxiety for Komi, but what looks like a problem just might be a bit more beneficial than it first appears。And that’s this series in a nutshell - always a bit better than it first appears。 Every time a new volume comes out I read it and start off bored and then come around to it by the end。 It’s a very specific pattern to this series。The whole end of class and changing class thing is fine; it has a Nope, still can’t communicate。 It’s a new year, classes are changing, and that brings a new wave of anxiety for Komi, but what looks like a problem just might be a bit more beneficial than it first appears。And that’s this series in a nutshell - always a bit better than it first appears。 Every time a new volume comes out I read it and start off bored and then come around to it by the end。 It’s a very specific pattern to this series。The whole end of class and changing class thing is fine; it has a sweet moment between our two leads after a game segment I found pretty dull and a tedious recap that basically proves I’m right that the series needs a cast list at the start of each volume。And then Rumiko Manbagi happens。Besides her name being a terrible pun, she is actually a subtype of gyaru (or “gal”) known as a manba gyaru, which is even MORE ostentatious than the regular old garden variety。 When I first saw the character I had no idea what to make of her - I’m glad I looked up her type as what initially looks insane is not really that far off the mark (although that hilarious horse ornament in her hair might be a bit far)。I think the gyaru with a heart of gold trope is becoming pretty common in manga (or always was and it’s reached enough saturation for me to notice) and this is no different - it shows how just because you can speak doesn’t mean you’re going to make friends any easier。It’s all very touching (the bathroom scene is legitimately heartbreaking and has one of the saddest lines of dialogue I’ve read in ages) and she and Komi make an unusually sweet pairing。 It’s so nice to see Komi take charge for a change。There’s a lot of good subversion of expectation with Manbagi’s friend group and her inclusion in the fitness test chapter is courtesy of the heroines of the school trip, who are always a treat to see。At first I was a little put off that the message seemed more than a little like it was screaming ‘CONFORM’ at the poor girl, but it’s not like I didn’t find her style a bit (okay, a lot) much myself and they’re actually just asking Manbagi to tone it down a notch rather than change who she is。Everything else pales in comparison to the stories with those two。 It’s a fairly predictable story twist coming with Tadano being the object of two girls’ affections, though I suspect Manbagi will simply let her crush drop。 The story with Tadano’s sister and Komi’s brother is an amusing variation on the theme but no more than that。Despite giving Yamai another icky line in the fitness test, I do have to say that pulling her from the main class and her subsequent reaction was literally the one time that character added something to the series。 Also, is fetishizing eating steak a thing? Because after this book it feels like it might be。 That was just。。。 odd。3 stars。 It’s got some wobbly parts, as usually happens, but it’s also got some fairly strong parts as well。 I keep underestimating this series because of its low points, but when it gets it right, it gets it REALLY right。 。。。more
